Rohit - A Story Worth Spreading

So after a spacious holiday season, days took their turn towards vibrant working schedules. With a refreshed spirit I was back to my work life. In the meanwhile, it is quite common with every Indian to land their thoughts on cricket when such a spine chilling match like India vs NewZealand is happening. In respect to time permits, starring at the scorecards in cricbuzz is the only thing I can do. In this process, a name suddenly dragged my attention on to it and made me remember of a kid with the same.

Rohit ( not the fantabulous cricket player Rohit Sharma) is a 10 years old kid whom I met accidentally in a journey.

October 2018-

In a relentlessly inconvenient journey towards my hometown, I was instructed by the driver to complete my lunch in a moderate ambient restaurant at an RTC station. Since I was starving from hours and desperately looking for food I ignored all the facility needs and started to eat. After a few minutes, I noticed a kid starring at me from my beside. Waving my hands at him I asked why is he looking at to me. Without answering to any of my questions he just uttered: "Three Rupees please!". Searching in my pockets I realised the fact that I lack the change.

( In view of readers, the conversation is written in English but the actual one was in Telugu)

Me: Why specifically three rupees? Can I give you Ten?

Kid: Three rupees is what I lack for a meal.

Me: No worries I will buy one.

(While having the meal, we had a small conversation)

I came to know that he is a waif, he named himself as Rohit. He stays in the slums near to that RTC station. He is an admirer to the hitting style of Rohit Sharma and that is the reason why he named himself as Rohit.

When I asked him "What would you do if you meet Rohit Sharma?"

Rohit: I would look at him and have a smile on my face!

Me: How about an autograph?

Rohit: I can't ask him an autograph, I don't know his language. (English)

After hearing to that I was muted with a feeling of deep sorrow. After 30 seconds of my silence in deep thoughts.

Me: 3 Rupees is not the thing you should be asking me!

Rohit: Then what I should I ask for?

Me: Follow me I will show you.

I had taken him to the next shop and purchased him a book and a pen. I had written the alphabets from A to Z and also their representation in Telugu. I made sure he can read them. I advised him to practice them first and later when he gets enough expertise with the alphabets I suggested him to approach a well-looking person every day and ask them to write 3 words with their translated meaning in that book.

Me:

Practice this daily and one day if the destiny plans you can ask an autograph from Mr Rohit Sharma.

Giving a smile I went back to my seat and when the bus took its reverse gear I observed Rohit practising in the book. My words aren't enough to express my satisfaction but I hope today Rohit enjoyed the running commentary to the match and play of Rohit Sharma's innings.

I could imagine how well can be a society if all the street children who ask for money from the people, would receive the donations as knowledge. With an aspiration to walk in such a self-less society. I would like to advise you to help one such kid by giving a book to them and suggesting them to get knowledge from the people, this can sensitise the society as well.

Sometimes we may lack the change to donate but not the knowledge to share.

Be a reason for their growth.

-- with love,dsp.
