Biomimicry- An Engineering philosophy!
Long back ago when I noticed that the clouds were about to shower on to the land, i used to search for papers to make and play with paper boats, whereas my neighborhood friends used to take out their bikes and place them on the roads ( Thinking that the rain cleans their bike) I used to laugh at them for a moment and continue with my paper boats, But I can't laugh at them anymore that's because of the smart paints which are capable enough to clean any surface on which they were painted, when subjected to water flow.
We should not hurry up and thank the technology, rather we should thank our nature first. Yes, that's because of the technology has not took birth at the labs of R and D but in the leaf of a lotus, Scientists just imitated the nature and this is what known as Biomimicry.
If you start your working day by tying your shoe velcro, if you draw energy from the solar panels, If its a goosebumps moment for you to watch Tom Cruise climbing up Burj Khalifa, if you got your bones adhesive after being broken then thank the nature first.
Today we might be enjoying the sophisticated technology, but there were days where even Japan is not able to solve an engineering problem, perhaps nature helped them. In the early stages of bullet trains the engines were capable enough to reach 170 kmph but when the train is passing through a tunnel the atmospheric air generated a sonic boom which can be heard from 400 meters away, This had let the project into trouble, But luckily the project team has Eiji Nakatsu who is a bird watcher, he used to amaze how a kingfisher can dive into water for its prey without even creating a splash. He took advantage on the design of Kingfisher's nose, belly of a penguin and recreated the design of bullet train.
This concept of imitating the nature characteristics to solve mankind challenges is known as biomimicry. There will be an ocean of examples if we dive into the outcomes of biomimicry. Probably there will be a day where we can observe whale wing inspired turbine blades and dolphin tail inspired wind turbine blades, Moth eyes motivated solar panels, sharkskins inspired hospital buildings
Even in this modern days of driverless cars, we are scared about their lacking cloud communication algorithms, but who knows if they were designed by the way the ants travel without any traffic or clashes we might achieve our limitations again.
Biomimicry is a never-ending source of motivation, Even when mankind is not worried about the existence of nature, nature worried about mankind's growth and contributed up to the mark. If mankind has any trace of gratitude it should protect the nature back.
If you are constrained with any challenge and looking up for a bit of solution, nature is ready to help you. All you need is to have a look at it!
- with love, dsp.
